Van Gogh’s faith

// July 28th, 2012 // 1 Comment » // Articles, Writings

Vincent Van Gogh is a painter whose writings and paintings express his awareness of the Divine. It is something that appears in his Correspondence with his brother Theo on many occasions throughout his life.

In Paris, in September 17, 1875 – when he is still working at the art gallery Gourpil, and does not know that he will be not a merchant of paintings but a painter- he writes to his brother: “The feeling one has for Nature’s beauty, however pure or delicate it may be, is not a religious feeling; but a kind of intelligence links them. Some more some less, we all have a feeling for Nature. But only a few feel that God is spirit and that they should worship Him in spirit and truth.”
